Why YOU should put YOUR SELF FIRST as a single mother.
Introduction
Being a single mother is incredibly demanding, often requiring immense physical, emotional, and mental strength. While of juggling responsibilities, self-care can easily fall by the wayside. However, prioritizing self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for both single mothers and their children. Improved Mental and Emotional Health is my most important reason for prioritizing self-care. As a single mother without a living mother or father or blessed with a large family I often wonder what will happen to my kids if anything should happen to me. That thought scares the hell out of me. I decided to do all within my power and more to stay healthy both physically and mentally for me and my children.

Below are some of the reasons why prioritizing self-care as a single mother isn't selfish but a necessity for you.
Reduces stress and anxiety: Single mothers face various challenges that can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Self-care activities like meditation, facials, or spending time in nature, gifting your self something you've always wanted, treating your self to a craving can help manage these feelings and promote emotional well-being.
Boosts resilience: Self-care practices like journaling or therapy can help build resilience and coping mechanisms, allowing you to better handle the inevitable challenges of single parenthood.
Prevents burnout: Taking time for yourself helps prevent burnout, which can manifest as exhaustion, apathy, and disengagement. By replenishing your energy, you'll be better equipped to be a present and engaged parent.
Increases energy levels: Regular exercise, eating healthy meals, and getting enough sleep are crucial for physical health. By taking care of your body, you'll have more energy to keep up with your children and daily demands.
Strengthens immune system: Prioritizing self-care can boost your immune system, making you less susceptible to illnesses and allowing you to be there for your children when they need you most.
Better Parenting:
Improved patience and emotional regulation: Taking care of your own needs makes you more patient and emotionally available for your children. You'll be better equipped to handle tantrums, meltdowns, and challenging situations.
Stronger parent-child bond: Feeling good about yourself makes it easier connect with your children. When you take care of yourself, you're better equipped to be patient, loving, and present for your children. This leads to stronger emotional bonds and a more positive relationship.
Sets a positive example: By prioritizing self-care, you teach your children the importance of taking care of themselves, both physically and emotionally. This sets them up for healthier and happier lives.
You can practice self-care by doing the following:-
Find activities you enjoy: Whether it's reading, taking a walk, listening to music, or eating good food, find something that brings you joy and relaxation.
Connect with others: Spend time with supportive friends and family, or join a support group for single mothers like DTI NETWORK
Delegate and ask for help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from friends, family, or community resources.
Set realistic expectations: Don't try to be perfect. Focus on making small, sustainable changes and celebrate your progress.
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish; it's an essential need required for your well-being and the well-being of your children. Remember that a happy and healthy you is the best version of you that your children need. Even small acts of self-care can make a big difference it doesn't have to be expensive. For me spending a few hours alone a day after work while the kids are yet to return from school just meditating while eating fruits or cooking something I desire that might be as simple and cheap as spicy noodles and coke works for me. Start by identifying activities you enjoy and schedule them into your routine. By prioritizing your well-being, you'll be better equipped to handle the challenges of single parenthood and create a happier, healthier life for yourself and your children.
